Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
is a non-invasive
and objective method of evaluating both cardiac
and pulmonary function.
It allows a very
accurate assessment of possible
cardiac failure, in a quantified
fashion.
|
As postoperative
mortality
following major surgery is closely
related to pre-existing cardiac failure,
CPX testing (CPET) has been used at the Western
Hospital (Melbourne, Australia) since 1988
to routinely evaluate all elderly patients prior to
major intra-cavity surgery. |

at the 'blood gases model' and see the effect of changes for
example, in Hb or mixed venous gases on the oxygen derived variables
or cardiac output. |
